San Diego
May 13-14, 2000

After a long morning of biking, we headed down to San Diego for the weekend. The primary reason was to see Joe Satriani perform on the 14th (see my pictures from his performance the following night here), but we had some time to see a few other things too.

We stayed Saturday night at the Wyndham Emerald Plaza in downtown San Diego. It's a nice hotel with a very "green" theme. The main interior/lobby area looks very neat, as you can see from these pictures.

Here's a nice fountain outside of Horton Plaza, just a few blocks from the hotel. We walked there Saturday evening and had a nice dinner at Rock Bottom Brewery in the nearby Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego. Fountain at night

Sunday afternoon was spent in Balboa Park. The Japanese Friendship Garden has a koi pond with waterfall among other things along its paths.

This man was quite amazing. He had a crowd gathered around all afternoon as people watched him do the seemingly impossible. These towers of rocks were balanced and held in place only by gravity and extremely careful placement. It obviously took him decades of practice to get so good.

This statue, the pond in front of the Botanical Building, and fountain were among the sights we saw on our way to the San Diego Museum of Natural History.

We didn't go into the Museum of Man, but its architecture was nice enough to warrant a picture. Alcazar Garden is nearby with a spectacular array of flowers.

The concert was at a small outdoor venue on Shelter Island, across the bay from downtown San Diego. I got a couple nice shots of the view while we waited for the show to start.
